This is a new quest, based on an original setting, created by myself and a group of friends. This is also my first time QMing, so, please excuse any errors, but do tell me after the session so I can improve. Background about the setting and the contained supernatural powers, geography, and more will be given as needed.

But, for now, we have an important question to ask. Who is our Protagonist?

The first step to deciding that is where he (Yes, gender is male-locked) will be starting.

In any case-- The Mystery Box wins! You all will be starting on a small island, which is part of the Asphodel Congregation. It's an island chain north of Edelweiss, and not part of any 'true' nation.

Now then, Players. The next question I present to you is... Which Island did you grow up on?

> Option 1: Forested, relatively peaceful. Most of the populace knows basic hunting and fighting, but is uncivilized.

> Option 2: Marshy island nearest to the mainland. More civilized than the others due to frequent trade, but also less likely to be some sort of badass.

Aaaand nevermind, seems I don't need to worry about that. Okay, so, Kalte Augen.

Given the roll of 32, you were born in the second-lowest caste. That is, the warrior caste, as warfare is not idolized by the isle of Vastkus.

Kalte, as a result, learned to fight from a young age, both unarmed, and with staff and spear.

That being said, he was born without the characteristic red eyes, his eyes being purple due to a recessive gene handed down through his mother's side. This resulted in alienation from his peers... And his survival when the isle of Vastkus went to shit.

A thirteen year old Kalte was on watch one day, a duty given to those still in training, only to see a mysterious, grey substance spreading across the sea in a line, far from the island but coming closer.

What does he do?

And so you do. No doubt alarmed at this sudden occurence, you slip down from your post, more or less jumping the full ten feet. As fast as your legs will carry you, you run to the gates of the village proper. Once there, panting from having run several hundred feet in one go, you place your hands on your knees, catching your breath.

The Guard Captain, Adolf, looks down at you, raising an eyebrow and not saying anything. As you know from his instructions though, he's expecting you to tell him why you're taking up his valuable time.

Uh, not moving--" You gesture with your arms and your spear, spreading your hands along the length vividly to get your point across. "Ex-expa... That word!"

Adolf's eyes don't leave you for a moment as you continue your wild-eyed explanation, and by the end... He laughs. This was... Incredibly unprecedented, to say the least. "Really, then? I see. You have good eyes, and a good heart, Kalte. I want you to take these, and go talk to the Chieftain, okay? Tell him that I'm going to go settle something, and he's to bring several men, women, and children from each Caste to 'that place'." With those words, a grin on his expression, he leans down, the older man handing you not a spear, but his sword, the rare type of weapon that only the Captain and elite guards were allowed to use, as well as it's sheathe, blackened leather embossed with silver.

Well, what will you do now? Your childhood idol has just given you a very important sounding job, and the second most renowned item on the island, after the Chief's staff. Whatever is happening, it seems Adolf sees something important in you.

Naturally, you were going to do as you were told. Sheathing the bright, silvered blade, its translucent edges glimmering in the sunlight, you set off, towards the Chieftain's home. Soon arriving, the Chieftain's eyes widen as he sees the sheathed blade, and you explain the situation, telling him what Adolf had told him.

You can see the Chieftain's eyes slowly drop to the ground, not facing you. "Right. Go to the north end of the island, opposite where your guard post was. Look for a small boat, and wait there, child. I will be bringing others, and we'll be leaving for a while." Something in the Chief's voice was... Wavering. Even though you're an impressionable child, you can tell something here is deeply wrong.

What do you do?

Yeah, it's super fast paced right now, but that's because this is all just character creation/backstory prologue stuff. At the end of this 'section' we'll be flashing forward a few years, to the beginning of Kalte's adulthood, and the pace will slow down quite a bit.

You take the direct route. Surely, you have to follow his instructions. Whatever's happening is clearly too dire to just go horsing about, but you can trust the Chief.

With your mind made up, you begin a path through the middle of the island, walking through the pale-white, coarse soil. You were aware that the forests in the middle were dangerous, and often contained animals, including some not found on the other islands, but it was just a risk you were going to have to take. Remembering that you had Adolf's sword at your side, gently running your hand over the leather... It gave you a slight comfort, almost like a security blanket.

Roll 1d100 for encounter. Higher means the encounter is more likely to be something beneficial, or at the very least not incredibly dangerous.

And as you continued through the forest, you could hear something. A light... Humming? You weren't quite sure what it was. But, as you kept stepping forward, you soon realized it. One of the Tribe's Exiles, Hilda, was sitting on a boulder, humming to herself. The aged woman looked down at you as you passed, chuckling lightly. "Well then... It seems that Adolf's passed the sword on. I guess that day's finally come, huh?" As you turn to her, confused by what her words mean, you can see her hand slip into her pocket. She soon pulls out a small necklace, which gently hums as she did when the central stone moves. "Come now, lad. I know you're not to trust Exiles, but... It'll hardly matter after today." A wry smile crosses her face.

Tentatively, you step forward, holding your hand out. "Hardly... Matter?" She shakes her head at your words, slowly placing the necklace into your much smaller palm. "I see, neither Adolf nor the Chief told you. Then, all I'll tell you is.. When you start sailing away from the shore, make sure to look at the island, okay?" She gives a wry smile, standing up from her position as she looks down at you, finally pulling her hand away after holding it there a little longer than you were frankly comfortable with.

"Right, okay!" You nod, still unsure what was happening. Regardless, every adult around seemed to be on the same page, so that was a good sign.

Despite being an Exile, Hilda turned towards the village, beginning to move towards it. She had continued humming, hands smoothing out her skirt.

"Come with you?" She stops in her tracks, but the older woman doesn't turn. Instead, she takes a second, considering it. "Well... I had planned to talk with Adolf one last time. But, I suppose I'll come along. After all, we're going to need some people to watch over the new generation, still." She laughs at herself, and you can feel warning bells firing off in the back of your head at some of her wording. Whatever was going on, people were going to die. For real. As fun as you thought today might be this morning, it seemed everything was turning out much the opposite.

The only question was... What would you do now?

Watch Adolf, and only help if you're absolutely sure you'll be safe, child." With those kindly words, she continues towards the boats.

"Oh, and... Put that necklace in your pocket. Only put it on if you're already caught."

You nod, turning and walking, then jogging, towards the village, as you could see flames and blades of steel launching into the sky. Whatever was happening, it clearly wasn't natural.

You just start running, heading for your family home. As you rush through the streets, you see that several people have died, pieces of metal skewered through their torsos or heads. What the hell was going on...? It was more like sharpened rods than any sort of weapon, and it only made you more worried for your family.

But, before you could make it to your home, you would have to sneak past the action, roll 1d100.

As you creep past, towards your house, you can see the flames and steel clashing properly. Namely, you can see Adolf, his scarred arms bare, as flames shoot from his hand, colliding with a large man in black's attack, large spikes of steel which had shot from the ground! Thankfully, neither seems to notice you, and you sneak into the house, only to hear a voice behind you while your back is turned.

"My, Adolf, it would seem we have an interloper. And such a young one, too!"

While I don't have a pastebin of any sort ready, I will say the main conflict of this world is between the equivalents of early Renaissance east Europe, and the ancient Chinese equivalents. With a healthy dose of supernatural factors thrown in that change the flow of things drastically.

As you turn, you can see the tall, large man dressed in all black. Somehow, despite not seeing you, he's noticed you. Raising one hand, more of those metal spikes shot out from him, only, they didn't seem aimed at you, as they soared through the house, past you.

And what's when you heard it, the screams of your parents as he had somehow shot them THROUGH the walls with the spikes. No doubt, wherever or however they had been pierced was incredibly painful.

Thankfully, you could see Adolf pulling himself out of some rubble behind the man, a sword drawn. His flame-shaped scars were visible on his arms, and he glared at you, shouting in his 'instructor' voice. "Kalte! You need to leave. I know how you feel, but regular people, especially a kid your age, are useless in a fight against a Lotus User! So, please, just get out of here!"

With anger boiling inside of you, yet your mentor telling you to flee, what will you do?

Before you can even think, you've made up your mind. Whoever this guy is, you're not just gonna sit around and let him get his way! Your hand reaches down to 'your' sword as you glare in his direction, a direct concentration coming over you. And that's when you see it. Another spike coming from within his sleeve, launched at you. Slipping to the side, you just barely dodge it, the spike nearly grazing your cheek as you have the time to draw your blade.

To your credit, the man in black seems absolutely astounded at what just happened. "That... Shouldn't be possible! It's only a kid, how is he using Focus?!" He steps to the side, as in your peripheral vision, you see a gout of flame fly his way and nearly catch him. You can hear a voice, but you can't decipher what it's saying, everything is focused on this bastard here.

What will you do next?

(Note, as we are using the same rules as Grand Dragon's Saiyan Conqueror Quest, passing the DC mitigates a single crit fail, with only double-crit fails taking precedence over it. Also, I'm not SOM, one crit-fail isn't going to kill Kalte.)

I can promise you that while Mystery Boxes may very well have downsides, they're universally positive overall. Also, CRIT/100. Oh boy, you guys are really turning Kalte into a shounen protagonist. This post will probably take a while.

You look to this bastard, and realize that you aren't looking into the eyes of just another person. This is the man who killed your parents. As you ready your blade, composing yourself to charge using the unfamiliar weapon, the unthinkable happens.

Adolf charges towards him, launching himself with a gout of flames expelled from his legs, only for a blade to form around the man's arm and swing upwards at the last moment. With an anguished cry, Adolf falls to the ground, clutching the shoulder joint his left arm used to be attached to, as blood runs down in a river.

And with that, you see red. Not just the blood, but everything. All you can think about is how much you want this bastard to pay. He turns to you, and says something, a surprised expression on his face, but you're too angry to even hear it. A burning pain is reverberating through your body, and you instinctively reach one hand forward, as you feel energy welling inside of you. An odd, pristine substance flows from your hand, as plenty of the bright, pearlescent sand of Vastkus's beachfronts launches forth in a torrent. The man is caught off guard, yelling something again that you fail to understand as he tries to stand up, after the blast of sand-like substance had launched him flying several feet.

You're going to take him apart. You're going to kill him. You know that. The only question is how.

Ability Gained: Lotus of the Moon. A rare 'Specialist Lotus', that is, an ability that only one person in the world can have at any given time. What does it do? You'll have to learn its powers another time. You're too angry to experiment and find out.

Ability Gained: Focus Pool. Now, when certain actions, both in and out of combat are announced, you will have to spend Focus for them. Utilize too much Focus, and the drawbacks of this mysterious new power will begin to catch up with you.

I like the fast pace nature of the quest and European names in a Eastern Setting. Posts could be a bit meatier with a bit more in-depth descriptive words and phrases of the surroundings, characters, and situations.
For instance, what are they wearing? Are they naked? Are they stashing things in their tumescent meat pocket, the moist, darken cavern that smells faintly of a freshly fertilized field? Are they wearing codpieces with stitched on sacs? What color are the character's hair? How tall are they? What does the surround area look like? Where are the screeches of the animals?
What time is it? Have several hours passed, minutes? Is it noon, afternoon, starting to become evening? How big is the villiage? Where are the screams? Where are the other invaders? Is everyone but your parents until you reached them and the people the chieftain gathered up dead?
I can only imagine so much without it all becoming a amorphous blob in a vague greyish hue.

Okay, in order.

1. Focus is the name of the energy, and it's inside anything that can make decisions. So, humans and like 99% of animals, as well as any mythical creatures. However, a tree does not have conscious thought, so it does not have Focus.

2. It's spiritual. If you've ever seen or read Hunter X Hunter, it's similar to Aura/Nen, in that it's not necessarily magic, but related to your mental state. Namely, concentration on a single goal.

3. Focus is all over the globe since everyone has it, but smaller tribes often don't have many who figure it out due to population density.

4. Who knows? The origins may be unknown, or they may be spoilers.

5. The purple eyes are related to Kalte's high amounts of Focus and unusual aptitude, but Lotuses are not hereditary. A Lotus is actually gained through a traumatic event in puberty, and anything with Focus can gain a Lotus. The actual Lotus itself is determined both by personality compatibility, and by what was around in the traumatic event. In your case, the moon-dust that makes up Vastkus's sands, steel, flame, Lotuses, and wood were the main things involved, so those were your choices. And yes, Mystery Box 2 was a Copy-Lotus of sorts that would let you temporarily copy over any other Lotus you knew about.

6. There is no explicit goal in mind. The whole reason I gave the anons the choice between the three paths was to help give them a slight direction in which to pursue their own goals, and what they think Kalte may want to do.

Okay, so, these ones will be partially redacted to avoid spoilers and metagaming with abilities Kalte wouldn't know about.

1. A Lotus can create and shape the material or concept linked to it at will, including manipulating existing pieces of that material telekinetically.

2. The limits depend on the Lotus, as each Lotus has direct drawbacks that begin occurring from over-use. For instance, Adolf's Fire Lotus begins to heat up and burn his body. Also, the actual mark where the Lotus is can be damaged, resulting in you temporarily losing the ability to use it.

3. No, you cannot have more than one Lotus. It's basically a nexus for your Focus during the spiritual awakening that happens in the trauma causing it. If you were to have two, you'd split your Focus in half, and effectively be able to use neither one.

4. A Lotus's ability type is its Domain. For Kalte this is Moon, for Adolf it is Fire, and for the man-in-black, it is Steel.

5. While I can't reveal too much, as it would be spoilers, the sword you wield is called a Moonblade, and is made of a steel-like substance that occasionally comes down in asteroids with chunks of the Moon, which is also what caused the differences in Vastkus's people and island.

To be honest, I think that picking Explorer with the Lotus we have was a shitty idea. I mean, if we can control the Moon-stuff, even in form of Dust, if we we're a warrior we could, if we trained our Lotus enough to control the moon-stuff in metal form, we could basically make something like try to stab a guy and in the last second make the blade tinner and longer and stab him before he can block the attack, like attacking with a Dagger and much before the attack with the dagger connects, turn the Dagger in a billiards stick and stab him.

But for Explorer, maybe if we can collect some sand/dust of the Island, maybe make something like dropping the sand/dust in the ground and make a mental image of something we saw before, like a picture, or even draw some memory-based map.

Or if we can make the moon-dust appear at will with our Lotus, maybe do something like Aang from Avatar when he uses Air Control to appear and Air Sphere down himself that make him move alot faster.

You can still use your Lotus the same ways you would otherwise, it's just that you don't have as much experience and learning behind it starting out. Even on the path of the Explorer, you're certain to run into quite a few fights, so you'll progress in that way regardless. Though, yes, it is possible to create images and sculptures with your moon-dust.

That being said, the steel-guy from earlier was literally building a bridge to walk on to get to your island. Most Lotuses have a good deal of utility uses like that, since they can create and manipulate something.

This concerns me, and I say this as both a QM and a player who has, over the years, seen hundreds of brand new quests die horribly. Sandbox quests are a bad idea unless your name is Soma, and even then Banished Quest faffed around for 250 threads before dying without closure. Your name is probably not Soma. The most likely results of presenting the players with no clear goal (and therefore making up the quest as you go) are:

>You realize you don't know where to go next, lose interest and/or hope, abandon the thread in short order
>The players get bored of running in circles doing nothing and leave
>You manage to keep going, but at best the quest is directionless and random

If there's one single thing I'd say any quest needs, it's a goal. Goals make it easy for you to plan, provide motivation, direction, and excitement for players, help define the MC as a person, and help keep the quest moving forward as a story. If you're worried about goals being "railroading," don't be-- players *want* to accomplish the goal set out for them and will voluntarily pursue it. If you don't have one because you started this quest on a whim with little planning except for the setting details you already knew about (the impression I'm getting)... it's not too late. Sit down, think about it, and give us some direction so we don't spend the rest of the thread voting "look at this" "look at that" "go to sleep" and then you flake before anything interesting happens.

Or, like, don't. It's your quest. But I know what I'm talking about.

Thank you for the advice, but don't worry. As players, everyone's edging closer to picking their own goal by taking a choice of which route Kalte went. That's sort of my plan, is to give you guys meaningful choices early on to give you all your own options for goals and decide what Kalte will think is important to do.

For example, if you all hadn't rolled so exceedingly well at points in the backstory, or if you'd played around, Kalte may have been the only survivor of his people, and thus have a goal of finding the Steel man-in-black and putting him down. Hell, he may still have that goal, if you all ever decide to put effort into finding him again.

Seeing a huge ship, you decide to sail towards it. It seems to be sailing rather slowly, so even with the large difference in the size of your vessels, you should be able to pull close enough to see what's going on.

And soon enough you do, seeing plenty of people in clothes even gaudier than yours lining the bow of the boat, watching over the water, bickering and commenting. Once you're noticed, though, an uproar begins to start, with cries of a 'Moonborn', and a 'Tainted One'.

Seems these posh guys really don't like you, what do you do?

You slowly paddle the small dinghy up to the side of the boat, putting your hands up after in a non-threatening gesture.

"Wait, wait, it's okay. I'm not here to attack you, I promise."

While many of the citizens onboard seem... Less than inclined to believe you, stepping away, someone stepped out of a large cabin on the top of the ship. An older man, with graying black hair, a thick beard of the same coloration, and a large, white coat.

"Easy now, let the boy speak! He seems a kind enough sort, granted his blade is at his hip and he has his coat unbuttoned!" The man bellowed in a rather deep voice, before approaching the end of the bow closest to you. "Now then, lad, what's your name? I'm sure even you Moonborn have names."

It seems it's time to test those people skills Hilda taught you to the test. This man is clearly old and courageous, so how should you answer him...?

You gather up your strength, and create a blast of moon-sand under you, launching yourself up. You'd tried to be stealthy, but unfortunately, you created more than you meant in your moment of focused anger, making it fairly obvious what you'd done as the terrified onlookers run, some even jumping overboard rather than stay on the ship with you. You see the presumed captain reach into his coat, and instinctively move right as he pulls something out, pulling a trigger. With a cloud of smoke, a flash, and a deafening roar, something was just fired at you like an arrow, but only managed to graze your cheek. As you land, you can ponder exactly what that burning object may have done if it hit dead-on.

That being said, it seems you and him have the entire deck to yourselves now, the onlookers having been scared below deck or to the edges. How will you open this?

Whatever weapon(s) the captain has, they're definitely dangerous, so we ought to be on our toes - We can't block it, that's for sure, so taking a defensive stance won't work. Of course, we should also try to close the distance, while evading, I just don't think rushing in directly is the best course of action.

You decide to focus on evading, not drawing your blade. As the man comes at you, you focus on him and his own sword. While doing so, you realize something... Despite having fine-tuned your ability to sense the Focus of others during your training, this man seems to have even less than the average person. That means that not only is he not a Lotus user, but he's distracted, and it shows with his incredibly low speed striking with his cutlass. It's easy for you to juke, turn, and dip past his myriad cuts and thrusts due to his slow speed and lack of precision, but you soon realize that he seems to be reloading the wood-and-steel object in his other hand as he's doing it-- The source of his distraction.

You decide to make sure this large man won't be able to attack anymore, at least for a while. So, you bring your hand up, yelling as you fire out a gout of lightly-packed sand. "Pocket Sand!"

The moon-sand easily catches him across the face, and his already low Focus diminishes, the odd machine discharging into the air in his panic as he backs away, swinging wildly and trying to get the sand out of his eyes by vividly shaking his small (for his body) head.

It seems he's more or less defeated, what will you do?

It's obvious that you're Moonborn, and an Islander at that, but... If you want to learn to use it better, head to Edelweiss, at the most northern port. There will be a man in a green hat. Tell him Captain Meyer sent you, and he'll help you with learning more about your 'gifts'. There's no point in wasting it as some random Islander."

The man seems to be telling the truth, so that may be a useful option in the future. Jumping back down to your boat, you begin to sail away from the large ship and its people.

The real question is, where will you go next?

The man freezes up as you say that. "A... Moon Lotus? I've never heard of such a thing, even among the elite soldiers. That's quite impressive, Moonborn. Then, if you fill my ship's cargo hold with Moondust, I will happily give you all of the Deniers I have on hand, as well as a special token of my appreciation!"

The spindly man actually BOWS at the waist while speaking, the first time someone else had shown you such respect rather than the other way around, so, how could you say no?

For the next half hour or so, you used your Lotus to fill his cargo hold, tiring yourself out, only for the man to drop a large sack of money onto your dinghy, and hand you a small rock. You could feel it siphoning your Focus, draining it....

"That, there, is a Lodestone. They come from the moon as well, but they're a lot more condensed. Many of our best soldiers put them in weapons and armor, since they can store Focus to be used later. I'm sure you'll put it to good use, though I hope you'll think about joining our Military someday."

With those parting words, your boat and the trader's boat leave, going their separate ways.

The next day, you arrived in the northern port, docking your dinghy and getting several shocked reactions from the nearby townsfolk. They all had darker hair tones, with the lightest being a yellow color that none of your island's people had, as well as dark or blue eyes.

But, now that you were in the big city, what would you do?
